Cut Materials with Hand-held Chainsaw


Participants undertaking training in this course will develop the skills and knowledge required by those who cut materials with a hand-held chainsaw in a variety of work settings including a construction, saw mill, forest products factory, timber retail yard or horticultural environment. It will cover the outcomes required to prepare and cut materials with a hand-held chainsaw Including basic operator maintenance checks.

Important information prior to enrolment

+ Course Delivery

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Allens Training Pty Ltd or Third party facility.

+ Entry Requirements

To complete this course, participants must have:

  • The physical capacity to cut materials using a hand-held chainsaw whilst wearing the appropriate PPE
  • Basic skills to interpret workplace documentation, use technical and workplace-specific vocabulary to accurately and legibly complete workplace records and forms, select and use appropriate spoken communication strategies with work colleagues and other personnel on-site when felling trees, and interpret hand signals with other operators to ensure safe tree felling and to complete routine calculations and report on size, length and diameter of felled trees

+ Course Duration

  • Face to Face – 4 hours (minimum) – full face to face course

+ Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

+ Certificate Renewal Requirements

No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

What happens at the course?

+ Learning Activities

Delivery of course information and learning activities.

+ Assessment Activities

Performance tasks:

  • Cut twenty (20) individual pieces of material with a hand-held chainsaw
    • Complete routine chainsaw maintenance
    • Complete relevant workplace records and forms

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
