Supporting All Trainers with Online PD Courses

With more than 600 Trainers and Assessors across Australia, ensuring that our trainers remain up to date with their skills and experience is essential. A component of this is their ongoing professional development.

If you are a current Trainer and Assessor, you would be aware of the regulators (the Australian Skills Quality Authority) requirements for Trainers and Assessors. ASQA state that we must ensure that all trainers and assessors undertake professional development in - the knowledge and practice of vocational training, learning and assessment, and competency-based training and assessment.

You can read ASQA’s Fact sheet on ‘Meeting trainer and assessor requirements’ for more about this.

If you are looking for some PD opportunities in the current climate where face-to-face courses can be challenging to find, Allens Training Pty Ltd offer a range of Online Trainer PD Courses that can be completed right now.

We are pleased to be able to offer all trainers the opportunity to undertake these high quality online professional development programs at a very low cost. Courses start for as little as $10 per course.

Whether you are an Allens Training Pty Ltd Partner or Trainer, or not, you can log in and complete these programs in your own time.

At the conclusion of each of these programs you will receive a certificate that can be used as evidence of your ongoing professional development activity.

These online professional development courses are broken down into three categories.

  1. Subject specific professional development courses that provide participants with updated knowledge in specific subject areas. Some examples include – blood clotting, basic spinal anatomy, and the management and control of bleeding.

  2. Training skills professional development, this covers skills that the modern trainer requires to deliver high quality training and assessment. Some examples include – improving your presentation skills, keeping your skills motivated, and working with culturally diverse students.

  3. VET sector professional development. This covers subjects that apply to the whole VET sector. Examples include – dealing with student complaints, conducting validations, and designing assessment tools.

As you can see these three categories align with ASQA’s requirements and the modern trainer requires professional development evidence from all three categories of study in order to meet the requirements of the industry.

Tips for managing your PD

It is each trainer’s responsibility to ensure they participate in PD activities and we know from experience that it can sometimes be a challenge to keep track of all the PD you are doing. Here are some tips to help with this:

  • Do not leave your PD till the last minute. Plan your PD for the year and select opportunities that you feel will benefit you the most.

  • Follow relevant social media groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Industry bodies and associations post a wealth of information on their pages to help keep you across changes in the industry and best practice and this counts as PD. It also provides an opportunity to identity events, seminars, or workshops that you may want to participate in. Attending these events also counts towards your PD.

  • If your RTO sends our regular alerts, newsletters, or email notifications, make sure you take the time to read them. Not only do they provide information to help keep you across changes in the industry, they also provide you with a number of professional development activities and events to participate in.

  • Manage the collection of evidence throughout the year. Now a days this can all be done online. Each time you complete a course, attend an event, read a publication etc. put your evidence (i.e. certificates, meeting agendas, attendance records etc.) into a folder on your computer. You can also store relevant URL’s, screenshots, and links on a document under the most appropriate of the three PD Headings.  Photos, scanned documents, emails, etc. can also be saved in the folder ready for when you are required to provide evidence of your PD to your RTO.
