Perform Advanced Water Rescues
Aquatic venues pose risks which can be very serious and life threatening. Patrons can be put in danger for many reasons and can quickly require urgent rescue. It is imperative that anyone acting in a lifesaving role quickly activates emergency systems and strategies for group control to maintain the safety of everyone in major aquatic emergencies. This requires extensive training and practice.
Participants in this course will gain the skills and knowledge required to identify, evaluate and respond to aquatic emergencies using established advanced rescue procedures. Training will cover the requirements for effective and appropriate communication, safely assessing a casualty, using equipment and techniques during rescue situations and organising further care. Participants will also report incidents, maintaining confidentiality.
Training is performed according to accepted best practice principles of aquatic rescues, first aid, relevant legislation and organisational policies.

Important information prior to enrolment
+ Course Delivery
This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Allens Training Pty Ltd or Third party facility.
+ Entry Requirements
This course has pre-requisite units of:
- HLTAID011 - Provide first aid
- SISCAQU002 - Perform basic water rescues
- Any individual undertaking the course will be required to provide a copy of their Certificate or Statement of Attainment for these units prior to training taking place.
This course has physical requirements:
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including:
- Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes without using equipment
- Retrieve an object from the deepest water within the aquatic environment no greater than 3 metres in depth.
- Complete a 25-metre swim and a 25 metre non-contact tow of a conscious casualty with assisted landing in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds
The physical fitness to conduct all various swim rescue techniques
Visual acuity to see the common visual signs and signals of a person experiencing difficulties in the water
- Hear the common signals of a person experiencing difficulties in the water which includes “calling for help”
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR
*Important note: CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.

Face to Face – 8 hours (minimum) – full face to face course

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

What happens at the course?

Delivery of course information and learning activities.
+ Assessment Activities
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
- Practical scenarios:
- Perform a non-contact tow of a conscious swimmer and after care
- Perform a contact tow of a conscious swimmer and after care
- Perform a contact tow rescue on an unconscious swimmer and after care
Performance tasks:
- Complete a fitness test:
- Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes
- Retrieve an object at the deepest part of the pool at the aquatic facility
- Perform the following aquatic rescues:
- Perform a non-contact tow swim rescue (swim 25 metres, and perform a 25 metre non-contact tow of a conscious casualty with assisted landing in less than 1 minute 45 seconds)
Perform a contact tow of a conscious swimmer (with oxygen therapy provided)
Perform a rollover and spinal board extraction of a casualty
Perform a team rescue of a submerged casualty (with oxygen supplemented resuscitation provided)
Documentation – Completion of an incident reporting form
Theory assessment - A written exam consisting of short answer and multiple-choice questions. All questions must be completed.
