Course Description

The unit CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (TAS) – is a crucial course designed to equip individuals with the essential knowledge and skills to work safely on construction sites in Tasmania. Commonly referred to as the White Card course, this unit is a mandatory requirement for anyone looking to enter the construction industry, ensuring compliance with both national and Tasmanian workplace health and safety (WHS) laws.

Upon successful completion of CPCWHS1001, students will receive the White Card, a qualification that permits them to work on construction sites across Tasmania. This training ensures that workers have the knowledge and skills to contribute to a safe and compliant work environment, protecting themselves and their colleagues from potential risks.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 6 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Proof of age must be 14 years or over.
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Follow instructions, identify hazards and ask questions to ensure safety procedures are understood.
    • Reading: Read short safety signs, labels, and simple written information about workplace hazards.
    • Writing: Fill out basic forms and write simple information.
    • Oral communication: Listen to safety information and speak clearly to share ideas, report hazards, and ask for help.
    • Numeracy: Understand simple numbers and measurements used in safety information.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources.
  • Valid working email address.
  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Protective slip-resistant footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.
  • Physical capacity to demonstrate the correct donning and removing of PPE for assessment

This course MUST be delivered in Tasmania only. Students undertaking this course must be a resident of the state in which the course is being undertaken.

Please Note: Students have 60 days after completing their training to apply for a white card at a service centre. If it is more than 60 days, you will need a written declaration from the RTO stating that you have successfully completed the training.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written, oral, and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment of this unit consists of three assessment tasks:

Answering a series of multiple choice and short answer written questions.

Answering a series of short answer oral questions.

Observation of learners demonstrating the correct fitting of the following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • eye protection
  • hearing protection
  • hard hat
  • high visibility retro reflective vest
