Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of first medical response workers or volunteers who provide initial patient care. These people offer basic first aid and emergency responses in the pre-hospital/out-of-hospital environment.

This program has been designed to equip the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to carry out basic first aid, encompassing a variety of conditions or injuries. It offers a practical/hands-on approach to first aid to improve patient outcomes.

This program is delivered to existing workers who demonstrate extensive industry experience and knowledge in the industry. Existing workers seeking delivery under this program would hold roles such as emergency response team members, supervisors, labourers, tradespersons and health and safety officers within the industry areas. 

Individuals completing this program are generally required by their workplace to undertake formalisation of their knowledge and skills as a workplace role requirement; or are required to continue to update or meet legislated or regulated industry requirements and sites standards as set by industry and their employer.

The existing workers undertaking this qualification will be able to demonstrate competency through a combination of training and recognition of prior learning.

Who is this Qualification for?

 

  • Individuals who volunteer in community emergency response teams or organisations such as the State Emergency Service (SES), surf lifesaving clubs, or volunteer fire brigades.

  • Individuals designated as first aid officers or emergency response personnel within their workplaces, especially in industries where accidents or medical emergencies are more likely to occur, such as construction, manufacturing, and mining.

  • Individuals who work in public safety roles, including security guards, public transport officers, and event safety staff.

  • Individuals involved in sporting clubs or recreational facilities who need to be prepared to handle medical emergencies during events or activities.

  • Individuals working in community health settings who require basic emergency response skills as part of their role, such as those working in aged care facilities or disability support services.

How is the Qualification Delivered?

Your learning journey includes both non-supervised and supervised components. Non-supervised learning allows you to explore relevant Codes of Practice, legislation, and industry knowledge at your own pace. You’ll also engage in practical activities tailored to deepen your understanding and industry familiarity.

Supervised learning takes place in a structured environment, whether in a classroom, workshop, online, or through guided activities and simulations. This hands-on approach ensures you are well-prepared for the practical demands of the medical first response field.

Assessments are designed to test both your theoretical knowledge and practical abilities. You’ll complete written and/ or oral questions, presentations, and skill demonstrations in either your workplace or a simulated environment, providing a well-rounded evaluation of your competencies.

Enrolment for this qualification will be for a period of six (6) months to allow each student the opportunity to complete all requirements for successful achievement of the full Qualification. Students with extensive knowledge and experience may seek recognition for one or more units of competency Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer (CT) within this Qualification and may complete the course in a shorter timeframe.

An individual undertaking this qualification with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Satisfactorily complete a language, numeracy and literacy assessment prior to or on course commencement to assess capacity to meet the LLN requirements of this course

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills

  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment

  • Unique Student Identifier USI

Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

There are no pre-requistites of co-requisites for this qualification.

After successful completion of the programme students will be awarded a Nationally Recognised Qualification for HLT21020 Certificate II in Medical Service First Response.

Units included in this qualification may provide credit towards a range of other health-related qualifications at Certificate II level and above, allowing students to continue with their Medical Service First Response knowledge and training and move into more advanced first aid/response training as a natural progression.

Students who successfully completed this qualification may be eligible for entry into further study such as:  HLT31120 Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport, or HLT31220 Certificate III in Basic Health Care.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the formal acknowledgement of a person’s current skills and knowledge, no matter how, when or where the learning occurred. The recognition gained may considerably reduce the study time needed to get a qualification.

What is Credit Transfer?

Credit transfer is a process which provides a person with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a Nationally Recognised qualification, based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications. A person may be seeking a credit transfer where the qualification held has been superseded and is no longer current or is very similar to another course they need or wish to attend or they are part way through one qualification and wish to transfer to another similar one. A person who has a Nationally Recognised certificate or statement of attainment for a course, either issued by another institution (RTO), or with Allens Training Pty Ltd (RTO 90909), may apply for credit transfer of their unit/s of competency to another. To be approved for credit transfer, evidence of completion must be provided, by way of an authentic or certified copy of the relevant certificate or statement of attainment. You must provide satisfactory evidence that the statement of attainment or qualification is authentic, is yours and that it has been issued by an Australian RTO.
