Course Description

The Gas Test and Permit Issuer course set, including units MSMWHS201, MSMWHS217, and MSMPER300, is designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills to conduct gas testing and issue permits for high-risk work environments. This training is crucial for those working in industries such as oil and gas, mining, construction, and manufacturing, where hazardous atmospheres and controlled permit systems are a part of daily operations.

This Gas Test and Permit Issuer course is ideal for supervisors, safety officers, and personnel responsible for gas testing and issuing permits in hazardous environments. Upon completion, participants will have the skills to conduct accurate gas tests, ensure safe work conditions, and issue permits in compliance with workplace safety regulations, enhancing safety and efficiency in high-risk industries.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 6 Hours
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 10 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Visual acuity to read the gas test results directly from gas testing meters
  • Protective footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment
  • Language, literacy and numeracy requirements - students must be able to read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to gas testing, conducting a risk assessment and issuing permits, speak clearly and unambiguously in English, explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues as well as understand the permit requirements. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses and interpret gas test/monitoring results.

Individuals undertaking this course set will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

MSMWHS201 - Conduct hazard analysis - Not applicable

MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres - Not applicable

MSMPER300 - Issue work permits - Not applicable

Performance tasks:

  • Respond to the two (2) simulated scenarios as selected by your assessor to:
    • Complete two (2) JSEA/ SWMS and a Hot Work permit, identifying hazards, assessing the risks, and implementing appropriate control measures 
    • Select and calibrate the gas testing equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
    • Test and monitor the atmosphere for harmful elements according to procedures
    • Interpret record and report the results from the atmospheric testing according to Permit and procedures
    • Raise and issue a work permit and monitor work for compliance
    • Receive an end of day report and close the work permit after checking the work undertaken and the work site satisfied permit conditions
  • During the above, the candidate must:

    • Implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for gas testing
    • Speak clearly and unambiguously in the language of the worksite and work effectively with others to raise and issue a permit
  • Complete the tasks in line with Federal, State/Territory regulations, confined space codes of practice, and other Australian national workplace or site procedures.

Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

  • two (2) risk assessments
  • Hot Work Permit

Theory assessment -   A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
