Course Description
The unit PUAFIR306 – Identify, Detect and Monitor Hazardous Materials at an Incident – equips students with the essential skills and knowledge to manage hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents by accurately identifying, detecting, and monitoring dangerous substances. This unit is critical for emergency responders, firefighters, and personnel involved in managing hazardous materials in industries such as manufacturing, transport, and environmental protection.
Throughout the course, students will learn how to assess and classify hazardous materials using specialised equipment and procedures. They will gain practical experience in detecting and monitoring chemical, biological, radiological, and other hazardous substances in various incident scenarios. The course covers the use of detection devices, safe handling practices, and effective response strategies to contain and control hazardous materials. Emphasis is placed on understanding the risks posed by hazardous materials and following safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to decontamination procedures.
This unit is highly relevant for emergency responders, HAZMAT teams, safety officers, and other professionals responsible for managing hazardous materials in incidents. It ensures that workers are prepared to respond to hazardous materials emergencies in a safe and effective manner.
Upon completing PUAFIR306, students will be capable of identifying, detecting, and monitoring hazardous materials at an incident, ensuring the safety of the public, the environment, and emergency personnel. The skills gained in this course are critical for effective hazard management and regulatory compliance during HAZMAT incidents.
