Course Description

The First Aid & Manual Handling for Personal Care Workers course, which includes HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely, is designed to equip personal care workers with the essential skills needed to respond to medical emergencies and safely perform manual handling tasks. This course is ideal for individuals working in aged care, disability support, or healthcare roles, ensuring they are prepared to provide both first aid and maintain safe practices in physically demanding environments.

Together, the First Aid & Manual Handling course provides comprehensive training for personal care workers, ensuring they can handle emergency situations and perform their duties safely. This course is essential for those in care roles, enhancing both their capability to provide quality care and their adherence to workplace safety standards.

Units Delivered

The following units will be included in your certificate:

HLTAID009

Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

HLTAID010

Provide basic emergency life support

HLTAID011

Provide First Aid

HLTWHS005

Conduct manual tasks safely

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours 30 Mins
Blended Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours 30 Mins
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 11 Hours 30 Mins
Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins.

Participants must have the physical capacity to use appropriate equipment, posture and handling techniques to conduct a manual move and/or lift.

Online study:  Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

The units have the following recommended renewal periods:

HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation - 12 months
HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support - 36 months
HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid - 36 months
HLTWHS005 - Conduct manual tasks safely - Not applicable

Performance tasks and Practical scenarios: 

Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position
Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
Perform CPR on an infant
Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
Manage a casualty with asthma
Manage a choking casualty
Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
Manual Handling Task: Horizontal movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
Manual Handling Task: High to low movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
Manual Handling Task: Low to high movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)


Documentation – Completion of a Risk Assessment form and an Incident Report Form.

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.
