Course Description
The unit PUAEME008 – Provide Pain Management – equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to administer basic pain relief in emergency situations. This unit is essential for emergency responders, first aiders, and personnel such as firefighters, paramedics, and workplace first aid officers who are required to manage pain in injured individuals until professional medical help arrives.
Throughout the course, participants will learn how to assess a patient’s pain level, administer pain relief according to protocols, and monitor the patient’s response to treatment. The course includes identifying the need for analgesia; accessing, preparing and administering restricted pain relief such as aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol, methoxyflurane (commonly referred to as the "green whistle") and Entonox to medically endorsed protocols; performing casualty handovers and completing analgesic use requirements including a Drug Register. Participants will also be taught how to communicate effectively with patients, ensuring their comfort while following legal and medical guidelines for administering pain relief.
This unit is ideal for emergency services personnel, first aiders, and workers in high-risk environments such as construction, remote areas, or sports settings, where managing pain is a critical part of first aid response.
Upon completing PUAEME008 – Provide Pain Management, participants will be able to confidently assess and manage pain in emergency situations, ensuring the well-being and comfort of the patient until advanced medical care is available. This training is crucial for enhancing patient care and improving outcomes in emergency situations.
