Course Description
The unit HLTFSE001 – Follow Basic Food Safety Practices – equips individuals with essential skills and knowledge to maintain safe food handling practices in various settings, such as healthcare, aged care, childcare, hospitality, and community services. This unit is critical for workers who prepare, serve, or handle food and must ensure compliance with food safety standards to protect the health of clients and customers.
Throughout the course, participants will learn the fundamental principles of food safety, including maintaining personal hygiene, preventing cross-contamination, proper food storage, and temperature control. The training covers how to follow organisational procedures for cleaning and sanitising food preparation areas, as well as safe practices for handling potentially hazardous foods. Participants will also be trained to identify and report potential food safety hazards to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements.
This unit is ideal for food service workers, kitchen staff, and care workers who handle food in facilities such as hospitals, aged care homes, and community kitchens.
Upon completing HLTFSE001 – Follow Basic Food Safety Practices, participants will have the skills to handle food safely and hygienically, contributing to a safe food service environment. This training is essential for reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses and ensuring the health and safety of those consuming food in various care and hospitality settings.
Please note: If your role does not involve working with vulnerable people but you are required to complete a Food Handler or Food Safety Supervisor course, the following units may be more applicable to your needs:

Course Delivery
When this course is delivered fully online with the practical skills and knowledge of food safety procedures are completed through the third-party observation form. Students must either be employed or secure a volunteer position at a workplace that will provide a third-party observer. This observer is responsible for witnessing and documenting the student's demonstrations using Allens Training third-party report form.
Entry Requirements
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills
- Visual acuity to identify food hazards as well as clean and sanitise equipment and materials
- Follow personal hygiene requirements including wearing appropriate flat, enclosed, rubber soled shoes for comfort and safety, long hair should be tied back and all unnecessary jewellery removed.

Online study options: The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.
Fully online option: Students must either be employed or secure a volunteer position at a workplace that will provide a third-party observer. This observer is responsible for witnessing and documenting the student's demonstrations using Allens Training third-party report form.
Course Durations
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.
Students completing fully online are expected to complete all learning and assessment activities within six (6) months of enrolment. Failure to complete all requirements may result in your enrolment being disabled/cancelled.
Assessment Requirements
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the Assessment Activities section.
Certificate Renewal Requirements
No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.
