Course Description

The unit MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres – equips students with the essential skills and knowledge to safely test and monitor atmospheric conditions in workplaces where hazardous gases or airborne contaminants may be present. This unit is critical for industries such as mining, construction, oil and gas, and confined space operations, where workers must ensure the air is safe to breathe and work in.

Throughout the course, learners will gain practical experience in conducting gas testing using specialised equipment to detect harmful gases, such as oxygen-deficient or flammable atmospheres. The unit covers how to correctly calibrate and operate gas detection devices, interpret readings, and take appropriate actions based on test results. Students will also learn how to identify potential atmospheric hazards, establish safe working zones, and follow workplace safety protocols, including proper communication and emergency response procedures if dangerous gas levels are detected.

This unit is ideal for workers in roles that require atmospheric monitoring, such as confined space entry, hazardous materials handling, or emergency response teams. It is also relevant for supervisors and safety officers responsible for maintaining a safe working environment in high-risk areas.

By completing MSMWHS217, students will be fully prepared to perform gas testing accurately and in compliance with workplace health and safety regulations. The skills gained in this course are essential for ensuring worker safety and preventing incidents related to hazardous gases in the workplace.
