Course Description

The unit SISSS00118 – Sports Trainer Level 1 – provides individuals with foundational skills and knowledge to perform as a Sports Trainer in community sports settings. This unit is ideal for those seeking to support athletes and teams by providing first aid, injury management, and player welfare during training and competition.

Throughout the course, participants will learn key principles of sports safety, injury prevention, and basic management of common sports injuries. The training covers techniques such as strapping and taping to support injured joints, recognising and responding to on-field injuries, and managing emergencies, including concussion protocols. Participants will also gain an understanding of their role in maintaining athlete health, facilitating recovery, and supporting safe participation in sports.

This unit is suitable for volunteers, coaches, parents, and individuals working with amateur or community sports teams who want to enhance athlete safety and contribute to effective injury management.

Upon completing SISSS00118 – Sports Trainer Level 1, participants will have the skills to confidently assist in sports injury prevention, provide basic first aid, and support player well-being during sporting events. This training is essential for promoting a safe sporting environment and improving athlete care in community sports settings.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 16 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 3 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins
  • Wearing appropriate attire to allow demonstration of different taping techniques

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

This certificate does not require renewal

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Planning and preparing a participant for sport competition
  • Supporting a participant in a sport competition
  • Reflecting on preparing participant for a sport competition
  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
  • Implement sport injury prevention and management strategies for injuries, illness, and medical condition
  • Sports taping

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.
