Course Description
The Course Set - Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Perform Water Rescues, including units HLTAID009 and SISCAQU020, is designed to equip individuals with the vital skills needed to perform CPR and supervise aquatic environments to ensure water safety. This course is ideal for those working in roles such as pool lifeguards, swim instructors, or aquatic facility staff, where responding to emergencies and managing water safety is a primary responsibility.
This Course Set is ideal for individuals seeking to enhance their water safety and emergency response skills in aquatic settings. Upon completion, participants will be fully equipped to perform CPR, supervise swimming activities, and carry out water rescues, contributing to the safety and well-being of all pool and water facility users.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.
Entry Requirements
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including:
- 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins*
- The physical fitness and strength to conduct various swim rescue techniques including a 10-metre contact tow of a person in difficulty
- Throw a rope and pull/ tow a casualty
- Visual acuity to see the common visual signs and signals of a person experiencing difficulties in the water
- Hear the common signals of a person experiencing difficulties in the water which includes “call for help”
- Literacy and numeracy skills to be able to meet the demands of the course including:
- Interpret detailed workplace policies and procedures for venue supervision, risk management of patron safety and emergency response
- Provide clear and unambiguous verbal and non-verbal communications to staff, activity leaders and patrons
- Resolve diverse and unexpected safety incidents promptly and decisively
*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions. Participants will be required to demonstrate rescue breathing techniques on manikins. Participants will not have the opportunity to request an exemption from providing rescue breaths if they wish to gain a competent result in the Unit of Competency and/or qualification.
Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.
Assessment Requirements
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
Certificate Renewal Requirements
The units have the following recommended renewal periods:
HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation - 12 months
SISCAQU020 - Perform water rescues - Not applicable

Assessment Activities
Performance tasks and practical scenarios:
- Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Recognise and respond to three (3) situations:
- Perform two (2) non-swim rescues - reach and throw rescue
- Perform two (2) swim rescues
- Complete a ten metre swim and then complete one non-contact tow, towing the rescued person for at least ten metres, and remove the person from the water without assistance from another person
- Complete a ten metre swim and then complete one contact tow, towing the rescued person for at least ten metres, and remove the person from the water with assistance from one other person
- Demonstrate the following knowledge and skills for each rescue outlined above:
- effectively utilise rescue equipment suited to the type of rescue
- communicate effectively with the person in distress to provide instructions
- demonstrate fitness and strength throughout the rescue
- Documentation – complete an Incident Report form
Theory assessment: A written exam consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions must be completed at the end of the training session. Students must answer all questions
